Atelier Nord

Atelier Nord asked for a space that could move between the practical and the ceremonial: a place to cut, drape, and photograph by day, and to host private clients by night.

We treated the volume as a single gallery — pale plaster walls, polished concrete underfoot — and inserted a few precise interventions: a freestanding marble plinth, a long blackened-steel rail, a Noguchi paper lantern that anchors the room.

Lighting is entirely indirect, layered from cove, sconce, and floor. The space photographs beautifully, but it was designed first to be lived in.

As a commercial interior design project, Atelier Nord had to earn its keep — it is a workplace first and a showroom second. We planned the floor so a shoot can break down and a client meeting can begin in the same hour: storage that disappears into the walls, surfaces that wipe clean, power and data run to where the work actually happens rather than where a drawing said it should.

Silver Lake — and Los Angeles more broadly — rewards spaces that feel unforced. The light here is generous and flat through most of the day, so we kept the palette pale and let the building's own bones carry the room. It is how we approach commercial interiors across LA: restraint that reads as confidence rather than absence, and a plan that still works on the busiest day of the week, not just on the day it was photographed. Two years on, the studio still runs the way it was drawn — which, for a commercial interior, is the only review that ever really counts.
