A young family's first house, redesigned around a single principle: every room should open to the garden.
Maison Verte is a quiet study in green — sage cabinetry, mossy velvet, deep forest tile. The palette emerged from the garden the family had spent years cultivating before the renovation began.
We rebuilt the rear of the house with floor-to-ceiling glazing and a generous kitchen island in honed Verde Alpi marble. A reading nook tucked under the stair holds the family's most-loved books.
Restraint was the brief. Every joint, every shadow gap, every brass pull was drawn and re-drawn until it disappeared into the whole.
Maison Verte was a full residential interior design commission for a young family, and the brief was as much about how they live as how it looks — somewhere a toddler can be loud and a dinner can still feel grown-up. We planned every room to open onto the garden, sized the joinery around real life rather than a styling shoot, and chose finishes that forgive the occasional scuffed boot.
Like much of our residential work in Toronto, the house had to hold up to the seasons. Deep glazing for the short winter days, hard-wearing surfaces for the wet months, and a palette pulled straight from the garden so the inside and the outside never read as two different houses. The children's rooms were drawn to grow with them — storage that adapts, a desk that becomes a workbench, a bed that earns its footprint twice over. The garden the palette came from is now the room the whole house turns toward, exactly as the family had hoped for the very first time they walked us through the empty house.
